2010 PRIUS - ECO-FRIENDLY CAR OF THE YEAR

February 12, 2010 - Cars.com has named the 2010 Prius the Eco-Friendly Car of the Year claiming that the third generation Prius delivers everything you could want in a Eco-Friendly, Gas-Friendly vehicle.

The third-generation Prius improves upon a model that effectively transformed the nameplate into an American mainstay. It also arrived at a critical juncture for Toyota, but this new model, is a hit.

The new Prius packs more power and better gas mileage - 50 mpg in combined EPA estimates. Base models start at an affordable $21,000, and loaded versions can be had with high-tech options from a solar roof panel that runs the air conditioning to a self-parking feature similar to the one Lexus offers in its LS flagship. Best of all, it now feels like a substantial car - ready for family outings or interstate road trips.

These days, eco-friendly drivers have a lot to choose from with hybrid technology in every model size but there's no denying this: The Prius is still the most fuel-efficient gas-powered mass-produced car you can buy - and in so many other ways, it's a big step in the right direction for a company that is taking those steps.

Hard Kandy Toyota Custom Yaris

2009 SEMA - Hard Kandy Yaris 002
The Toyota Yaris is known for offering its owners a stylish package, with an emphasis on value. Yaris buyers have creative spirits and when it comes to their vehicle, these owners value a balanced blend of style and feature content to reflect their own personalities.  Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. including their own Toyota Corporate Accessories Department (CAD), and some key aftermarket suppliers worked together to showcase an example of how a Yaris 5-Door Liftback can be customized to enhance its youthful attitude.

The Toyota custom Hard Kandy Yaris theme is focused on the female buyer, and shows how customization can reflect ones interest in music, media, and styling elements that are important to the young, independent woman.  It also reflects a free-spirited outlook that is attainable for owners who value customization, and want to personalize their vehicle.

Visual Image Systems Co. produced the custom exterior wrap to serve as the foundation for the theme. The wrap incorporates a design in shades of pink, which includes swirling ribbons for movement, and flames to add an element of strength.  The exterior wrap is complemented with a sport body kit, Toyota CAD roof end spoiler, and an Inalfa 845 Signature Series built-in sunroof, that features a one touch open and close illuminated switch that allows you to fully open, close, or vent the solar tinted glass panel, and convenient standard auto close.  Toyota CAD supplied Pirelli PZero Nero tires and 18-inch maximum contrast wheels with machined and black finish to complete the exterior modifications.

The custom interior showcases Roadwire OEM Replacement Leather Interior and includes factory matching leather trim colors, as well as Alcantara, highlighted with custom embossments to match the interior and exterior graphics, and Toyota Yaris embroideries. Alcantara was used for custom seating trim, door panel inserts, and a complete headliner replacement.  GGBailey.com provided custom carpeted floor mats featuring thickly serged edges and computer controlled embroidery depicting the Yaris name in pink, to complement the interior upholstery.

Ground Effects Limited further enhanced the interior by embellishing the door panels and center cluster with a pink lightening design using a seven-stage water-immersion image transfer process that instantly affixes any color, design, or pattern to a non-porous product. The pink lightening on the interior complements the exterior graphics theme and makes a statement that encompasses power, strength, and personalization.

Toyota CAD provided additional interior upgrades including an interior light kit, sport pedals, sport shift knob, and a Blu-Logic Bluetooth hands-free system.  Performance modifications include an axle-back exhaust and a Fujita cold air intake system.

A premium audio/visual system was provided by Alpine Electronics of America, Inc. and allows the ultimate control of an iPod through a touch-screen control interface.  West Coast Customs further enhanced the technology in the Hard Kandy Yaris by building a media center that dons an in-car computer and media management server provided by VMOD and a 7-inch LCD/TFT high resolution monitor provided by Vizualogic.  This system is capable of getting 3G internet service allowing vehicle occupants the ability to stay connected to friends, family, and colleagues.

After its debut at the 2009 SEMA Show, the Hard Kandy Yaris will be used by Toyota, Alpine, and Roadwire for a variety of consumer and industry events.

Toyota Begins Production of Third-Generation Sienna at Indiana Plant

Sienna - Indiana Plant 001
Sienna is styled, developed and assembled in the U.S.

PRINCETON, Ind. (January 20, 2010) - Production of the all-new 2011 Sienna minivan is underway at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana (TMMI)  in Princeton, Ind. Fully redesigned to meet the needs of consumers, the new Sienna was styled at Toyota's Calty Design Research Center in Newport Beach, Calif., and developed at the Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Production of the new Sienna, as well as Highlander production that began last October, is welcome news for the Indiana plant as it was underutilized during the current economic downturn.

Investment in Team Members and Facilities
Toyota invested approximately $450 million to upgrade the plant. With the start of Highlander production at TMMI last October, and the recent launch of the all-new Sienna, the plant's outlook has improved dramatically.

TMMI's survival story is rooted in the way it treated team members during the downturn, an approach far different from most manufacturers. TMMI and other Toyota plants in North America capitalized upon the skill and know-how of team members rather than conduct layoffs.

"It made more sense to further invest in our experienced team members," James said. "We refocused our work. When we weren't building vehicles, we were preparing for a brighter future."

TMMI implemented a training program where team members gained a deeper understanding of the Toyota Production System and fundamental Toyota auto manufacturing skills. The anticipated result is even stronger application of this knowledge to the production line.

"It's difficult to roll out such comprehensive training when the line is moving," James said. "Our company spent a lot of time developing the best way to do every job in the plant, so the downturn was actually a great opportunity to complete this training in order to sharpen our skills."

Team Members Lead Improvements
TMMI also encouraged team members to further kaizen, a Japanese term for continuous improvement.  No ideas for improving processes and reducing waste were too small; in fact, hundreds of improvements were implemented resulting in an estimated savings of more than $7 million.

Other team member ideas bolstered safety and ensured consistent quality.  For example, the installation of the lower front console on the all-new Sienna put the team member in an awkward position. Team members found a small power tool that ensured the console snapped securely in place every time while eliminating an ergonomic issue.

"Our team members know better than anyone else how to do their jobs and they always have the flexibility to change processes in order to improve safety, quality and efficiency," James said. "Again, big improvements are difficult when the line is running.  But the downtime allowed for significant advancements.

"The power of more than 4,000 people working together on this type of activity is incredible. Our decision to fully utilize our team members was expensive, but it's paying off already.  Currently, our quality is much better than it's ever been and our safety is among the best in Toyota."

Shared Sacrifice
Toyota offset some of the cost by adopting a "shared sacrifice" approach, including the elimination of executive and salaried bonuses, executive pay cuts, production team member bonus reductions, overtime elimination, and a hiring freeze.

"These were responsible, step-by-step measures designed to help us protect employment security and strengthen our company over the long term," James said. "Now, as the market slowly returns, we are in a great position."

TOYOTA LAUNCHES HIGHLANDER PRODUCTION AT INDIANA PLANT

October 12, 2009 - October marked the beginning of production for the Toyota Highlander sport utility vehicle at the company's plant in Princeton, Indiana. The Highlander, Toyota's 12th North American-built model, production is a $450 million investment in a more efficient utilization of the manufacturing capacity.

Originally the Indiana production plant produced the Tundra pickup, which was consolidated last fall to the Tundra plant in Texas. The Indiana plant, which also builds the Sienna and Sequoia, has been preparing for the production of the Highlander for a year.

As a testament to Toyota's commitment to North America, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana reacted to several months of slow production by retaining all of its 4,200 team members, who were further trained and improved manufacturing processes to prepare for the Highlander production.

TMMI now represents a $3.7 billion investment. The addition of the Highlander boosts production at other Toyota plants, such as West Virginia, where the 6-cylinder engine is made, and at nearly 250 of Toyota's North American suppliers.

Since it was introduced in 2000, more than 1 million Highlanders have been sold in the United States.

WANT 59 MPG? WE TESTED THE 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS

July 21, 2009 - The Maus Media Group, an advertising and research consulting company, tested the 2010 Prius this week and were surprised by the findings using the all-new fuel saving "ECO mode".

On a control 50-mile run at 65 mph, we recorded a fuel consumption of 44.2 mpg. Once we re-fueled and switched the Prius into the ECO mode we ran the same 50-run at 65 mph and the results were shocking! With the Prius in ECO mode we came up with a fuel consumption of 59.6 mpg. This is a saving of 15.4 mpg just by pressing a button!

By pressing the ECO mode button:
  • The gas mileage is maximized by reducing throttle response up to 11.6%
  • The air-conditioning operation is changed to reduce fuel consumption

Other features that establish the 2010 Prius as a superior Eco-Icon:
  • Solar Roof. When the vehicle is parked in direct sunlight, the available solar panels power a fan that can bring in outside air, cooling the cabin close to outside air temperature.
  • Efficient Design. The results are one of the most aerodynamically efficient mass-produced vehicles in the world: just 0.25 drag coefficient.
  • Pre-Collision System. The system is designed to determine if a frontal collision is imminent, and automatically apply the brakes and retract the front deatbelts to help lessen the severity of impact.

For more information on the 3rd Generation 2010 Prius, please visit David Maus Toyota or call 407-302-8800 to schedule your test drive today.
