What's New for the 2019 Toyota RAV4?

The new RAV4 will be released this winter and it'll be a top pick for crossover SUV shoppers. One of Toyota's flagship SUVs, the RAV4 is now in its fifth year of production. With each successive year, tweaks and changes have made the RAV4 an even more appealing and customer-friendly vehicle. This year is no exception, and the RAV4 has some significant mechanical and stylistic changes to note. A redesigned exterior gives the 2019 a sportier, edgier look. Beneath the hood, a 2.5L, four-cylinder engine gives it more driving power and better gas mileage.

The 2019 RAV4 is also built on a new platform, which is called the TNGA. This platform is longer than what's been used for the RAV4 in the past, which makes the 2019 model longer and roomier than earlier editions. Inside the cabin, there's more space between the passenger rows, and the 2019 RAV4 is the first in its family to get standard 19-inch wheels. A more rigid suspension system and enhanced rear suspension system, combined with its new height, make the 2019 RAV4 perfectly suited for off-road adventures. Adding to the RAV4 safety-oriented image is a panoramic backup camera that adjusts to view rear surroundings.

What are Some Exciting Trims and Features for the RAV4?

Even the base model RAV4 in 2019 gets a whole suite of standard features, and each successive model builds on those amenities. All RAV4 family members have all-wheel drive, which comes with a special multi-terrain handling package. The package provides extra power and control in select weather conditions, including mud, sand, rocks, and snow.

The latest RAV4 also has a unique Toyota design, called the Rear Driveline Disconnect, which provides even more precise handling capacity when driving off road. The 2019 RAV4 is well-equipped for entertainment when driving, with standard features including WiFi, Apple CarPlay, and access to Amazon Alexa. Moving up from the base model, the next trim is the Limited.

The Limited has a backup camera, a seven-inch entertainment screen, and a power-operated driver's seat with lumbar support and driver memory. The Limited also comes with several optional items, including heated back seats, ventilated front seats, a power-operated lift gate, and a panoramic moonroof.

The sportiest trim in the family, and the sportiest RAV4 to date, is the XSE. The XSE is available in a hybrid option. It has unique sporty accenting inside the cabin and an enhanced suspension system. The Adventure is another outdoor-oriented trim. This model features sport roof rails, rugged exterior designs, and powerful fog lights.

How does the 2019 RAV4 Perform?

2019 Toyota RAV4The 2019 RAV4 is powered by a 2.5L, four-cylinder engine. The engine is matched with an eight-speed automatic transmission, which is paired with a continuously variable transmission, or CVT. The RAV4 is made standard with a gasoline engine, but there is also a hybrid version available. Dynamic Torque Vectoring, which is Toyota exclusive technology, allows the gasoline-powered Limited and Adventure models to run primarily on all-wheel drive. The car can also switch to rear-wheel drive or provide individual wheel power when needed.

High Marks for Safety

2019 Toyota RAV4In the past, Toyota has combined tech features and physical safety features to make its vehicles protect occupants in the event of a crash. Along with a multi-terrain feature that gives drivers optimal handling in certain weather conditions, the 2019 RAV4 comes standard with hill ascent control and downhill control assistance. A backup camera with the capacity to pan out is another plus.

All trim levels have a frontal collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, and a pedestrian detection system. They also have lane departure warning and lane-keep assistance, as well as adaptive cruise control. Optional safety add-on features include rear cross-traffic alert and blind spot monitoring.
